Hope in Madness

Elettra Allende is the embodiment of perfection: she gets perfect grades, comes from a respected family, and always lights up every room she enters. But one doomed joyride with her best friend Aria ends with one dead and the other blamed for killing her closest friend.

“Wait, that’s a really good song—go back.”

I laugh but press the button on my steering wheel to play the last song again. Leave it to Aria to never skip a Lady Gaga song once it comes on. I turn right onto a semi-quiet street instead of going left to go back to Aria’s house. I know her well enough to know that neither one of us wants to end this joyride yet. I keep my eyes on the road in front of us, but I can still her smiling out of my periphery. “What is it, Ari?”

“I have an idea.”

“Oh dear lord.” I roll my eyes because any idea that Aria comes up with means we’ll be getting into some sort of trouble later, but it’s worth it to have some fun with my best friend.

“It’s not bad! What if we—”

My phone dings with an incoming text right before she can tell me the plan. I look down to the wireless charging pad on the center console between us where my phone lays. Not wanting to ignore it if my mom’s wanting me to come home, I ask Aria to check it for me while I drive.

“Of course, what kind of friend would I be if I let you text and drive?” She teases as she picks up my phone. Even while focusing on the road, I could sense the shift of the mood in an instant. Aria’s smile drops.

Rings Around Us

Sofia Lopez is a scholarship student at Crimson U, the place all the rich people and politicians send their kids for college. One of the stipulations for her scholarship is to submit service hours each month, which she fulfills by tutoring other students in psychology.

Matt Andrews is Crimson's star lacrosse player, but he risks being benched because of his grade in social psychology. He needs Sofia's tutoring. The only problem? She hates his guts.

I stood up, shoved my hands in my pockets, and stretched my legs. Taking a few steps, I quickly made it to the bookshelf Sofia had been hiding behind. She wasn’t there anymore.

I had a pretty good idea of where she went, though, because I saw a girl turn a corner into a different section of the library. Oh, how I love a good chase.

She probably thought I didn’t see her when I looked up because she wasn’t running away. She looked calm and undisturbed, and I wanted to break that. Sofia Lopez, the woman you are.

I took large strides until I turned the corner she disappeared around, and lo and behold she was there. She faced the bookshelf with an open book in her hands like she picked out a good book to read a moment ago. I rolled back my shoulders.

“Sofia,” I growled, plucking the novel from her hands and inspecting it like a bug. She looked somewhat surprised to see me, probably more surprised that I saw her in the first place. After a second, she recovered and glared at me.

“What do you want, Andrews?” She spat my name like a curse. I smirked, but nerves wracked the inside of my body. This girl exceeded my expectations in every way — with her wit, her rampant hatred for me and the guys, and her unwavering opinions. She challenged me, and I wasn’t used to it. Other girls at Crimson were easy; so many of them lacked self-respect and dignity, choosing to fall at my feet without me saying a word to them. Sofia, though, she was difficult. I wasn’t sure I liked it, but I wasn’t sure I hated it either.

I didn’t answer her. I held her gaze and watched her stubbornly try to one-up me with her stare. She tilted her head up ever so slightly, and this scene could have looked completely different to someone if they didn’t know about the mutual dislike flowing between us. Her eyes narrowed as if she wanted to test how far I would go to win our stare-down. It was a clear indication to me that she didn’t know as much about me as she liked to think because if there was one thing in life I loved the most, it was winning. And I was going to win against Sofia in every way.
